Sports Betting

Introduction

Back in the day, there were several reasons that made sports betting so popular in India, and it still remains the same despite the government launching many policies to stop money-related gambling activities. These include the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025, the Information Technology Act 2000, the Public Gambling Act 1867, and various state gaming laws, which I will explain further in this blog.

Here you will get a full understanding of why this platform is becoming popular. Continue to read.

What Is Sports Betting?

Sports betting means an activity where users place bets (odds like back and lay) on their favorite sports. Platforms like diamondexch99, Sky Exchange, Fairplay Exchange, and others are good examples of such betting sites. There are two types of sports marketing:

  • Sports betting market (odds-based)

  • Fantasy sports market (skill-based)

The main types of sports gaming markets break down:

Sports betting market (odds-based): Here, players directly bet on outcomes like match wins or player scores based on set odds and put money on it (such as back and lay betting).

  • Backing bets: The event/outcome will happen, e.g., India will win.

  • Laying bets: The event/outcome will not happen, e.g., Australia will win the match instead of India.

Fantasy sports market (skill-based): Here, players select a virtual team and manage them based on past performance statistics during the match event. They decide the pitch and role of players. This involves a fixed entry fee and fixed prize money, where players compete against each other's virtual teams.

In-play or prediction market: This is a real-time, fast-paced prediction market where random questions pop up on the screen during a live match, such as predicting how many sixes will be hit or how many balls it will take to score a four.

This basically explains the excitement of sports betting and the market, showing how fun it sounds. However, understanding the reasons behind its popularity requires deeper insight.

Why Is Sports Betting So Popular in India?

If we explain this, there are two perspectives: one from the normal player/user and the other from the government (the benefits behind it).

As a user (consumer):

  • Sports culture: Sentimentally, it connects with Indians, especially cricket fans. This attracts users to betting platforms because they want to connect through their favorite players, follow matches, share opinions, and test their knowledge and skills.

  • Digital foundation: The internet is cheaper, and smartphones are widely adopted. Instant online payment support through secure networks like UPI, GPay, etc., makes betting accessible.

  • Connected: Betting gives players validation and allows them to test their sports knowledge by creating teams, helping them engage with statistics beyond just watching live matches.

  • Entertainment plus incentives: The idea of winning real money or exciting gifts from the community helps millions of Indians join betting, acting as a continuous engagement strategy.

  • Aggressive marketing & endorsements: These platforms use high-profile celebrities or favorite teams as brand ambassadors to push marketing and ads, encouraging fans to support their favorite stars. League sponsorships, such as IPL partnerships, are common examples.

From the government’s perspective:

If the government wants to legalize sports betting, there are massive benefits. Here are three key highlights:

  • More revenue to the government: Income tax is a primary source of funding for public welfare and development projects. The betting and gaming industry has become a massive, dependable source of state revenue through a strict tax design. Under Section 115BBJ of the Income Tax Act, all net winnings from betting, gambling, or real-money online games are taxed at a flat rate of 30%.

  • Boost to the economy: Sports betting contributes to GDP (28% GST) and helps with potential job creation.

  • Government control: Legalizing betting gives the government power to regulate, charge taxes, and control rules, ensuring continuous funds from sports betting activities.

This explains why people want to play and why the government views betting activities in this way.

Indian Government Betting Activity Policies

Now let's discuss the Indian government's regulations and policies on online betting activities:

  • Public Gambling Act, 1867 & State Gaming Laws: Physical betting/gambling centers are banned.

  • Information Technology Act, 2000 (and IT Intermediary Rules): This act gives the government the right, under Section 69A, to block access to any illegal betting activities conducted through websites, apps, and intermediaries. It also allows the government to ban related sites, content, and advertisements provided by betting operators.

  • Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 (and Rules, 2026): This policy covers online money-related games and stakes with a hope of winning cash prizes, whether based on skill or chance. It enforces strict penalties of up to 3 years in prison and fines up to 1 crore INR.

Conclusion

This blog briefly explains the main roots of sports betting in India from the perspectives of people, government, and laws. Despite strict policies and penalties, humans tend to chase banned or illegal activities. It's important to note that some offshore (international) betting sites are still active in India, where some players continue to participate.

Also, betting laws vary from state to state in India. Each state follows its own local rules, so please check the laws before proceeding.
